It?s Going More Expensive When You Are Getting Older For Auto Insurance

There were 550 serious accidents last year where the driver was over aged 70 and where driver was either killed or badly hurt, reports the Institute of Advanced Motoring . That statistic represents 8% of the national total of 7,035 similar accidents. That means that the over 70’s’s have more, very serious accidents per mile than any other sector of the population. This view is supported by the Association of British Insurers whose research shows that drivers aged over 70 are 13% more likely claim on their student auto insurance than the drivers aged between 40 and 50.

As the number of elderly drivers will double during the next ten years, this represents a problem for elderly drivers and their families – not to mention the insurance industry, police and indeed all of the emergency services!

You can probably predict the response from the insurance industry. Many state auto insurance company already reckon that drivers over 80 are as high a risk as the under 25’s – and charge premiums to match! Some are even progressively loading premiums once the driver reaches 60. Then at 70, you’ll discover that many insurance simply refuse to offer cover. Norwich Union and Esure won’t quote after 70 and by the time the driver reaches 80, the field narrows to specialized insurers who insure elderly drivers. Help the Aged and Age Concern both market policies that have no upper maximum age. Cornhill only accepts new policyholders up to 84 but if you’ve been insured by them for a few years, there’s no upper age limit. RIAS and Saga are also pleased to consider older drivers.

As the price of average car insurance rates is based on historical claims experience, a 75 year old male driver can expect to clear at least 33% more than if he were aged 50. By the time the driver reaches 80 the premiums hit boy racer levels! So if you’re in your early 50’s keep smiling at the lowest premiums you’ll ever experience they won’t last forever!

And the fairer sex fare even worse. Whilst younger women are renowned for their safe driving, they become more accident-prone as they get older. Whereas male drivers improve with age. (Where have we heard that before!) As a result, elderly women drivers pay the highest rates for car insurance.
It’s a biological fact that eyesight and reaction times worsen as age creeps on. And with traffic becoming heavier and road networks ever more complex, elderly drivers can more easily become disorientated and confused. Even a fraction of a second’s delay can manufacture the difference between an accident and a near miss. Insurers are reacting by insisting that more elderly drivers take a medical before agreeing to provide insurance. The best advice is to build up a no claims record and as soon as possible and buy No Claims Protection. This protection amount a bit more but it’s well worth the money. Then make sure you clear for any small bumps yourself.

But there are some simple steps that older drivers, and indeed all drivers, can take to reduce the likelihood of them having an accident and thereby making themselves more insurable. It’s frequent more about those little things and being alert to likely problems. For example, car parks are a breeding ground for tiny accidents.

Before you get back into your car, walk round it to see how much room you’ve got. Then edge out carefully making sure that other drivers in the car park aren’t driving into the area you’re moving into. Then, if advancing years has stiffened you neck and all-round visibility is a bit more difficult, take special care at junctions and when reversing. Remember to move you head and swivel your shoulders – that way you’ll increase your sweep of vision.

Many of the policies for older motorists contain special provisions designed to assist them. On Saga’s policy for example, ex company car drivers can use any no claims record they’d built up and if a couple are insured and the main driver decides to quit driving, then the spouse can take over the no claims record. Other policies also provide full insurance cover for anyone who takes over driving in an emergency. Cornhill will even settle out if the DVLA stops you from driving for health issues associated with age.

In moves to diminish the numbers of accidents involving the elderly, the UK Government is investigating the issue of deteriorating health amongst elderly drivers. It seems to be considering the idea of obligatory health checks for elderly motorists. At the same time some local councils are introducing initiatives of their own. Torbay council has launched a scheme to encourage families and GP’s to take more responsibility for encouraging elderly drivers who are not truely fit drive, to give up. A road safety spokesperson for Torbay council said, ?he problem is that the elderly can’t always see themselves when it’s truely time to give up driving so those closest to them must take responsibility for that.?

In the meantime, a survey carried out by the Institute of Advanced Motorists confirms that older motorists are aware that they represent an increase accident risk. Seven out of ten older drivers surveyed said they would like to take a refresher course for motorway driving skills and six out of ten wanted to improve their performance at junctions and on unlit roads. In response to these issues, the Institute has extended its advanced tests to older non-members to encourage them to improve and build up confidence. The tests also help spot any serious problems that should encourage the driver pack up driving.

Keeping your car in good running condition is more important today than it ever was. Choosing an auto repair facility is also important. Your choice of an auto care facility can affect your wallet, your safety, and the environment. There are many things to consider when making this choice. Let’s look at a few.

Finding a good auto repair shop has always been of great concern for most people. Not only do you want to receive great service, and get you money?s worth, you also want a place where you feel comfortable and at ease. Everyone has been in the situation where they go to an auto shop, and the mechanic quickly rushes you through, and you leave feeling like you?ve been taken advantage of. Fortunately, today there are numerous repair shops to choose from, so that no one has to be stuck with bad service. There are, however, a few things to consider when looking for a good auto shop.

One of the most important and easiest things to perceive when you enter an auto shop is the level of professionalism. When you enter a good auto repair shop, there should be someone greeting you and alerting you about wait the time. This not only shows that they are organized, but are considerate of you as well. Another sign of a good professional establishment are National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certifications. This organization provides ongoing testing and certifications for mechanics, and is an excellent way for consumers to verify if a mechanic is truly competent to do their job.

Another thing to look for, are mechanics that build good rapport with you. This means having a mechanic who will look you in the eye, listen to all of your concerns, and thoroughly explains how they can help you. This is a sign that they are trustworthy and concerned about your issues.

Another important characteristic of a good repair shop are clearly stated policies. These include estimates and guarantees on the work performed. These policies should be in writing and carefully explained to you by the auto shop.

An additional thing to remember when looking for a good auto shop is to always shop around. Visit different shops, get a feel of the employees, owners, managers, and ask friends and neighbors for recommendations. As an alternative, when you visit a new repair shop ask other people in the waiting area if they have used the shop before and how they liked it. Having repeat customers is good sign that you are in reputable establishment.

Lastly, when looking for a good auto shop, remember to do some research. There are many places to take your business to, so invest time in looking for the right place. A great reputable auto shop is family owned Murphy?s Autocare. Murphy?s Autocare has been delivering great service for years. Their employees are ASE certified and will make you feel like family. Saving Energy ? How You Can Go Green And Assist To Save The Environment

From the operators of www.iBuyLessGas.com–dedicated to improving MPG with Ecomates Ethos FR+ Gas Saver.

As the expense of living continues to increase, energy news and broadcasts are packed with energy saving tips and suggestions. Some energy saving tips involve initial investments, some just solicit a change of lifestyle. The best energy saving tips are those that require almost nothing but changing a practice. This one is about the wise energy saving choices.

1.Limit, as much as possible, the use of water. Of course water is not that pricey (at least for now); but saving water saves energy. When cleaning the driveway, the deck or patio, using the broom instead of the hose would save several hundreds of gallons of water a year.

2.A push lawn mower is a good idea for mowing a small lawn. Aside from not using electricity or fuel to ride the mowing machine, it is also good exercise.

3.Rakes are good leaf movers. Like the push mower, you do not need energy to fuel up a machine to get the job done. There is also a sense of nostalgia in using this traditional tool.

4.Use compact fluorescent light bulbs to illuminate your driveway or as a security light. CFLs are one of the most handy and energy efficient products that you can have. If you are nervous about bugs sticking to the light, there are yellow CFLs that are available.

5.When shopping, keep away from going for the throwaway items. Disposable products need more landfills and landfills emit dangerous gasses. Go instead for items that could be used several times over. Again when shopping, go for products that are made of better quality. They might be a little more expensive but generally, quality products last longer.

6.Bring your own bags when shopping. Paper bags are made from trees; the environment can use more of them. Plastic bags on the contrary are oil based and are not biodegradable. If you bring your bag with you, you do not only aid in saving energy, you could also get a discount from your store.

7.Batteries have toxic materials. They produce heavy metal like zinc, zinc, arsenic, cadmium, mercury etc. Thus, disposal needs proper care. Once the heavy metal in batteries seeped into the ground it has a good chance of contaminating the ground. When buying products that would need batteries, pick those that are rechargeable. That way battery disposal is limited and you save on the cost of buying new batteries.

8.Good thing that SUV sales everywhere are going down (well, at least for the environment and not for car manufacturers). SUVs use much more energy than compact automobiles for the same distance. While using SUV’s could be fun, there is also that tinge of apathy to the current energy issues and environmental problems we are facing. Reducing the use of SUVs on the street may not mean much in terms greenhouse gas emissions but is a signal to manufacturers to build more energy efficient vehicles.

9.The use of solar power is an excellent idea if you want to tackle the issues of energy conservation and environment protection. If there is one thing that the world needs most at this time, it is the widespread use of solar power.

10.Energy saving devices may cost a little extra but the pays offs are much more than the extra cost in terms longer life spans and energy saved.

When Is The Best Time To Buy A New Car?

When is it time to buy a new vehicle? Is it when you need to start making repairs? Is it when you can afford a new automobile? This is a dilemma currently facing me. Is it worth keeping your old automobiles knowing you will have problems with them but the chance of having a problem out ways the new monthly payment you will have to take on.

I have two cars a Dodge Durango and Chrysler Concorde both about ten years old. Both of my cars have over 140,000 miles on them and have needed to be fixed over the last three years. Is it time for me to bite the bullet and trade at least one in or should I hold off. If I had to trade one in it would be the Concorde it has about 20,000 less miles on it and already has major repairs done to it. A couple of years ago it needed a new engine, then more recently a new timing chain both pretty expensive repairs. The engine cost well over $2000 and the timing chain around $1200 but the car has been paid off for 5 years. How I see it I made out, $3300 over 5 years breaks down to $660 per year or $55 per month. It?s a lot better than a $350 per month payment.

Our Durango is also paid off but has more miles on it The only real problems it has had has been around the air condition unit and a mishap by my children. My kids jammed change into the CD player causing the radio to be fried. The total to repair both was $1300. Our reason to keep the Durango is because it is more useful to us.

So my dilemma again is, is it a good time to consider purchasing a new vehicle? My wife and I have been considering it for a while now. I have a few reservations about getting a new vehicle. The first of course is taking on a new large payment. We would want another SUV if we purchase. We do a lot of outdoor activities, snowboarding, canoeing, camping ect., so we need something to lug our gear, kids and clothes. With our Durango also older we know over the next few years we will also need to replace that vehicle. So to us it just makes sense to get the SUV first as a more reliable vehicle we can feel safe in on longer trips.

Reliability is our 2nd reason we are considering a new car. Since both of our vehicles are older there is a reliability fear that looms over us on longer trips. This would be solved with a new automobile.

Another issue to look at would be our insurance rates. They would go up by at least $100 per month with a new automobile with full coverage. Even if I applied all the discount auto insurance techniques I know.

It may not be time to buy right now with the holidays coming up and our finances kind of low but this is something we will need to address within the next year. The reliability and safety factors out way the new cost we will have to endure. After the holidays we will be on a vehicle hunt. Should we buy brand new or something with low miles a couple of years old. Hmme, This sounds like something to write about next.

Oil Change Inspection Austin

Trying to find a good auto repair shop that you can trust, that has certified technicians that really know what they are doing, and can provide a full line of service repairs isn’t as easy as most people might think; even in the Austin area. Automotive repair shops are a dime a dozen, and it seems you can find one on every corner but it’s hard to know who or what you are getting involved with.

We have all heard the stories about rip-off mechanics and we’ve seen the expose’s on the nightly news. What that leaves us with is a distrust of all auto repair shops – whether warranted or not. That’s really not fair, but unscrupulous business practices just seems to be rampant. If it’s never happened to you, count yourself among the lucky but you probably know someone who has a auto repair horror story they can tell you if you have time to listen to Clutch Mechanics Austin:.

There are, however, some highly respected automotive repair shops that are located in the Austin area. Shops that are family owned, indpendent businesses, with years and years of verifiable experience. Auto repair places that have loyal customers that are happy to give testimonials and gladly refer their friends and neighbors without having to worry about repercussions. That’s the kind of place you can use with confidence. You don’t leave your car there and spend the next few days wondering just how they are going to try to get over on you this time Car Clutch Austin.

The very best auto repair shops do everything they do with the customer in mind. They use the diagnostic tools they have to identify the problem, then they use their expertise to narrow it down even further thereby reducing the cost of repairs due to misdiagnosis. Sometimes changing out several parts in order to find the exact problem is unavoidable, but having the peace of mind that comes from knowing your mechanic knows what he is doing helps to ease the pain when they hand you the bill.

Some auto repair shops use hit and miss diagnostics and run up huge bills with unnecessary repairs, and unless you are a mechanic you’re not going to know just how badly you’ve been had. All you know is you’re really not happy with what’s taken place, how long it’s taken to repair your vehicle, and the bill itself is just a total shock.

To avoid an unpleasant repair experience there is a place that offers great customer service, along with a complete lineup of automotive repairs done all in one place. Their technicians are ASE certified and the shop itself is a certified NAPA Auto Care Facility. Whether you need a repair, routine maintenance, an inspection, or tires, Dave’s Ultimate Automotive can do it all. Dave’s Transmission Austin

There are many options out there when it comes to choosing the mechanic for your vehicle. It seems that everywhere you turn, there is another lube shop or brake shop, and they all manage to stay busy. Yet which one is the right one? Is it smarter to take your vehicle to a specialty shop when it needs work done on those parts, or a general repair shop? Surely the specialty shops are better trained on those particular systems, right? The answer is almost always no.

Customers expect a good mechanic to have answers to their questions, and to know more about repairing their car than the average Joe. Why, then, would you want to take your vehicle to a shop that only provides certain services? Unlike a doctor, auto mechanics do not necessarily have to have a general knowledge of how vehicles work to change oil or brake pads. There is nothing requiring them to take a class that teaches them how to recognize problems that may keep the car from being reliable in the future, or issues that can be fixed cheaply now to avoid an expensive repair later on down the road. In fact, even if they do notice a problem, they are not in any way obligated to tell the customer about it. They don’t care, it’s not their business. Besides, if they were qualified to make that determination, they wouldn’t be working at a place that only did brakes or oil.

How often does someone get underneath your vehicle, besides to change the oil or do other maintenance? Have you ever looked at the maintenance schedule in your owners manual and taken note of how often the manufacturer calls for various things to be inspected? A well trained general mechanic knows all of these things by heart. Without even thinking about it, he is checking various subsystems of you vehicle every time he does a simple oil change. He does this because his last job may have been repairing or replacing that exact same part on a different, or even similar vehicle.

Transmission Austin is all about experience and customer service. The best mechanic is the one who knows how to fix your car, identify problems before they happen if at all possible, and advise the customer on the best course of action with the customer’s interests in mind. After all, we want you coming back for everything your car, or any other car in your family may need, be it maintenance, repair, or just a quick once-over before that trip across the country. A trusted, general mechanic is also invaluable when it comes time to buy a used vehicle. The lube shop can’t tell you if a car’s transmission is in good shape.

Custom Boss Wheels And Understanding The Plus Sizing Concept When Choosing Custom Wheels

Filed under: Used Cars — Tags: — carguru @ 11:16 pm

Chrome Boss Wheels are Manufactured by the American Eagle Wheel Corporation. American Eagle Wheel operates two manufacturing facilities in the U.S., one in California and the second in South Carolina. They utilize the most advanced technologies in the industry including: ProE, ProMechanica and Magma engineering software within their R&D teams; “counter-pressure-casting” technologies, which were pioneered by AEWC and research facilities in Europe; exclusive use of precision CNC machine tools and state-of-the-art coatings facilities to create the finest finishes available.

Why should you outfit your car or truck with new Custom BOSS Rims? At Tulip City Wheels, we are big believers in the Plus Sizing Concept. Besides enhancing the look of your vehicle, the plus sizing concept is a key reason to switch wheels. Plus sizing your wheels and tires will improve both the handling and aesthetics of your vehicle. It is possible to properly maintain the overall wheel and tire diameter of the vehicle by using a larger diameter wheel with a lower profile. This keeps odometer and speedometer changes small. Your vehicle will gain quickness in steering response and better lateral stability when you use a tire with a shorter sidewall. Also, most wheels look better than the sidewall of the tire, so the more wheel and less sidewall there is, the better it looks.

While Plus Sizing has long been used in the Custom Wheel and Tire industry, and there are many guides to Plus Sizing for many vehicles, you should be aware of some caveats whenever you are following a guide for plus sizing your wheels. First of all, you as the installer should always check the wheel, tire, and vehicle, front and rear, before, during, and after you install the wheels and tires for proper application, fitment, and clearance. When you install wheels and tires that aren?t original equipment, like Custom BOSS Rims, be aware that this may affect systems like the ABS, TPMS, and Electronic Stability Control systems. Also choose wheels and tires that have the proper load capacity for your vehicle, and always maintain proper air-pressure in the tires.

When you have concluded that your new BOSS rims fit correctly, proper installation requires that the wheel lug torque be set to the recommended specification for your vehicle. Sometimes these torque specifications can be found in your vehicle’s owner’s manual, however more often than not you will need to refer to your vehicle’s shop manual or obtain them from your vehicle dealer/service provider.

We’d like you to visit us first, but maybe check out the competition on BOSS rims first and visit us last for your Best Deal! Custom Auto Interior: 3 Reasons To Consider Seat Re-Covering

Filed under: Car Modifications — Tags: — carguru @ 8:15 pm

Having your car?s seats re-done/re-covered is a fairly large custom auto interior project, but even so, it is generally reasonably price and well worth doing. There are many reasons for wanting to get your seats recovered, ranging from simple aesthetics to a complex project involving a restorative effort or the realization of an image you have visualized and are seeking to express. These reasons typically break out into three broad categories, and we?ll cover them in brief below. It?s important to understand where you ?fit? on this spectrum, so as to better define exactly what it is that you?re looking for and/or hoping to accomplish with the successful execution of your project. A clear understanding leads to better and more clearly defined goals, which in turn, leads to a higher level of satisfaction when all is said and done.

1 – If you want to update your vehicle and give it a fresh look, the seats are generally the biggest, most eye catching part of the interior of the car. If you can only afford to have one thing done, this will make the biggest visible difference for the money spent. Add to this, the fact that of the various projects you could choose to undertake, the seats will be relatively less time intensive than many others, and you?ve got yourself a clear winner.

2 – If you?re restoring a classic car and want to return it to original ?off the showroom floor? condition, you?ll almost certainly need the services of a specialist. That?s a big, intricately detailed job, and not one that many people can do on the fly. Again, the seats are a major part of the restoration of the interior, and as such, should be a priority. Again, completing this ?leg? of such an involved project will give you some fairly quick, highly visible signs of your progress!

3 – If you?re taking advantage of existing damage to effect a change. Maybe you?re not looking to drastically alter the look of your car?s interior, or maybe you don?t want to change a thing, but if you?ve got damage and want to fix the vehicle up and extend its useful life, then re-padding and re-covering the seats will certainly help you accomplish your goal!

Remember that re-padding and re-covering your seats is NOT the same thing as having seat covers installed. Seat covers merely go over what?s already there. What we?re talking about is having the old upholstery removed and replaced/updated with new. Totally different thing, and orders of magnitude more valuable in terms of enhancing the overall value of your vehicle (seat covers can help preserve value, seat re-covering can enhance).

This is but one of a great number of services that a good custom auto interior specialist can perform for you.

Custom Auto Upholstery – Three Crucial Things To Look For

Filed under: Car Modifications — Tags: — carguru @ 6:20 pm

If you?re planning on having any custom auto upholstery work done to your car, there are three traits you need to be on the lookout for in whatever specialist you choose to do the work for you. Those three traits are:

1) Attention to Detail. Getting custom auto upholstery work done isn?t one of life?s necessities. It?s an extra. A perk. Something you?ve decided to treat yourself to, and if you?re going to spend the cash, you want to make sure the job gets done right. No detail is too small, right? If the ?look? you have in mind requires monograms that match exactly with the car?s logo, or a specific type of stitching, then you don?t want that stuff to be overlooked or hurried.

2) Thoroughness. Akin to the above, but a category unto itself. If you?ve decided to pay for a service like this, then the last thing you want is someone taking shortcuts with the project, as this will nearly always reduce the overall quality. I?m talking about stuff like door panel rebuilds. Some specialists will leave bits of the old material in place and simply glue the new stuff over it. The problem, of course, is that the adhesive doesn?t stick properly, and it won’t be long before you get rattles and noises as stuff starts falling off. Not good, and not what you wanted when you shelled out your hard earned money, so look for a guy who is not going to take shortcuts like that, but who is going to do a good, thorough job for you.

3) And finally, you want a specialist who offers a wide range of services. It is pointless to take your car to half a dozen places to get it just the way you want it, and it tends to work against itself anyway (?too many cooks in the kitchen,? you might say), so you need to find someone who does it all. At a minimum, if your custom auto interior specialist can?t, or is not willing to do the following:

Basic upholstery repair/replacement
Custom seat cover design
Custom floor mats
Headliner replacement/Visors & Consoles
Trunks & Interiors (absolutely anything inside the vehicle)
Floorboard repair/replacement
Dashboards
Door Panels
Console buildouts
Custom Covers
And
Convertible tops (repair/replacement)

Then you should probably keep looking until you find someone who will do all those things, and more!

There are a lot of people for whom a car is simply a means to get from Point A to Point B, and there?s nothing wrong with that, but if your car (or truck, or motorcycle, or RV, or whatever you drive) is more than that for you, and if you want to make aftermarket modifications to make it truly stand out, then great care needs to be taken when selecting a Custom Auto Interior Specialist to do the work. Otherwise, you risk wasting a lot of time and money, and set yourself up for disappointment.
